In these unsettling times, many organisations are sadly having to let some of their staff go as they can no longer afford to keep everyone on.
Back in January, who could have guessed that the economy would take such a downturn in 2020?
Perhaps your organisation wasn't prepared for this and hence your managers aren't highly skilled at dealing with staff redundancies.
Maybe they have never been trained in how to deal with redundancies or perhaps it has been a while since they have had to deal with redundancies.
Whatever the reason for the skills gap, there is one thing for certain... Having managers who aren't sufficiently skilled in managing redundancies poses a risk to your organisation. If a manager mishandles a conversation it could result in the member of staff submitting a grievance or making a complaint or appealing the decision. All of which cost the organisation time and money to resolve. In the worst case scenario, the employee could take the organisation to an Employment Tribunal as they believe they have been unfairly dismissed. This can be very costly and stressful for all parties involved.
The best solution is to seek to avoid this happening in the first place by making sure your managers are sufficiently skilled to manage the conversation they need to have and the process they need to follow with their staff.
The first step is to understand the skills gaps of your managers. Once you know what the gaps are, you can then create a plan to manage the upskilling of managers to handle redundancies in your organisation.
